Combining hardware and software modular systems like this will be worth the price of admission alone for modular enthusiasts – but what’s in it for the rest of us?

Out of the box, you get 30 prefabricated Blocks divided into eight folders. The remaining folders are Boutique two oscillators and a filter based on unspecified classic synth hardware , Modern comb and smooth low-pass filters , Digilog a couple of sequencing tools , and Util eight utilities – mixing, metering and CV processing tools. The various oscillators and filters sound utterly fantastic, and if you’re after analogue-style sounds in your DAW, Reaktor 6 is among the best – very possibly the best – we’ve heard to date, with unmatchable flexibility.

What’s more, the supplied Blocks plus nine ensembles fashioned from them are just the tip of the iceberg, as NI provides templates for creating your own Blocks, which can be shared in the Reaktor User Library.

The potential here is staggering, and we can’t wait to see what the Reaktor community will come up with. Reaktor 6 is a phenomenal update that improves on NI’s already amazing softwarein practically every area, from the Table Framework-enhanced fundamentals to the re-organised library, smart visuals, and, of course, the incredibly exciting Blocks. MusicRadar The No. Home Reviews. Our Verdict Version 6 of Reaktor finally realises the series’ potential as a practical way to make your own instruments and effects.

You need Native Access to install; that process is well explained in the documentation. Got it? Using this thing you spent no money on, you can watch a 2-minute tutorial with Nicky that is also free and learn how to make your first synth. There are a ton of extras, and it all feels, for lack of a better word, totally Reaktor-ish. Why yes, thank you, I would like to make IDM for the rest of the night.

Glad you asked. In a dark and complex world, what better than to disappear into headphones and listen to the sound of gently morphing oscillators, I ask you…. The block is a real Swiss Army knife: it can be used to draw or record modulation, used as a drawable audio-rate oscillator, used as part of a generative music patch, used for recording and storing notes of a sequence, generating clocks and much more.

Reaktor 6. Fairly quickly I was starting to put together some modest synths, with a bit of experimentation and reference to the example instruments. The factory library contains a good selection of Blocks divided into several categories: the Bento Box collection contains your essential oscillators, VCA, filter, envelope and LFO generators, mixer, etc. You then have Utility Blocks, and several more characterful modules in the Boutique, Modern and Monark folders, the last of which holds the essential components of the Monark Minimoog emulation in modular form.

Some effects Blocks have also been included, in the shape of the Reverb and Delay sections from Rounds, and the Driver filter and distortion processor. My first Blocks synth made from bits of Moog. This arrangement has allowed NI to contrive this new system without fundamentally changing Reaktor. First, connections between Instruments are monophonic. A traditional Reaktor synth has all its component parts living within an Instrument, with the component modules and macros and their interconnections able to operate as multiple parallel voices.

The Blocks layer exists outside this polyphonic universe. So you can store different sounds that all share the same cabling, but to store a sound that employs different patching requires saving as a new Ensemble. While Blocks appears to bias this Reaktor update towards the casual user, instrument builders have not been entirely left out.

Like the instrument library, the developer library of modules, macros and operations has undergone a thorough spring cleaning. Many Core macros have been optimised for better sound quality and performance.

The collection of components known as Classic Modular, which was an earlier attempt to create a standardised group of building blocks for analog synth creation, has been dissolved into the main library. There are also some new features and objects offering both efficiencies and fresh possibilities for developing in Reaktor. Table Reference is a new signal type that allows access and distribution of data from arrays to anywhere in a Structure. Used in conjunction with updated sampler macros this paves the way for a new generation of samplers and sample manipulators in Reaktor.

The new objects also provide for drag-and-drop import of samples. This arrangement has allowed NI to contrive this new system without fundamentally changing Reaktor.
