RAID 1 uses two or more drives, each a duplicate of the others, to provide redundancy, not backup. It’s used in situations almost always within corporations, not in homes where any downtime can’t be tolerated, because the way it works is that if one drive fails the other takes over seamlessly.

Most companies that use RAID 1 also have a strong external backup plan in place. Ken Blake — Thank you for your reply. In reference to Windows 10 Home and a Raid 1 setup, I have not been able to get it to work. Regarding Raid 1 redundancy vs backup, I backup my drive on a quarterly basis.

However, I have used a Raid 1 configuration for many years because I feel I have saved a significant amount of time just replacing a bad drive and letting the system rebuild the new disk drive.
